If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.
Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
— Henry David Thoreau
D.C.'s Different Drummers started in 1980 with 7 musicians who got together in an apartment in DC to play through some books of college fight songs. The first song played by the band was On Wisconsin.
Today our membership is over 150 people with ensembles that cover classical, jazz,
contemporary, and marching music. We play all over the DC metro region.
Most of our ensembles are non-audition. Many of our members hadn't picked up an
instrument in decades, so everyone is encouraged to join.
After all, if you're out of the closet shouldn't your instrument be as well?

D.C.'s Different Drummers is a very active organization. Our multiple ensembles perform multiple engagements throughout the National Capital Region all through the calendar year. These activates require a lot of expenses, including rehearsal space, instrument rental and repair, advertising, insurance, and traveling expenses, to name but a few. Support from our community partners and donors is essential to the continued operation and growth of our organization.
D.C.’s Different Drummers is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. There are numerous options available interested patrons can support our organization. Your support empowers all members of our musical community to perform with PRIDE! We thank you for your generous contribution. See you at a performance soon!
