DCDD Celebrates 25 Years
D.C.'s Different Drummers is celebrating its 25th year of music, visibility, and pride! During 2005, DCDD will be performing two anniversary concerts. The spring concert on Friday, April 8th, and Saturday, April 9th, Freedom, will celebrate in music the birthright of gay Americans to full and equal rights. A highlight of the program will be a stirring rendition of gay composer Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait, with longtime gay activist Frank Kameny narrating.
The fall concert, A Place for Us celebrates the band that has been home to our members for 25 years. The fall concert is scheduled for November 11th and 12th. The title is from Leonard Bernstein's song, "Somewhere," which will be featured on the program, as well as music representing the history and times experienced by the band and band members. A tribute to the late Michael Rutherford, DCDD's founder and a tuba player, will take the form of a performance of Jim Curnow's Concertino for Tuba. A post concert wine and cheese reception will be held to allow prior members of the band to meet with current members to renew acquaintances.
