In summer of 2023, DC’s Different Drummers tragically lost one of our most passionate and dedicated members, Beth Smith. Joining DCDD in 2004, Beth played the euphonium in the Symphonic Band and the trumpet in the Marching Band. Over the years, she served as the Assistant Band Director of the DCDD Symphonic Band, contributing countless volunteer hours and leaving an indelible mark on our organization.

Beth’s commitment to DCDD’s mission was unwavering. She meticulously prepared concert programs for the Symphonic Band, provided invaluable logistical support to DCDD’s various ensembles, and truly embodied the spirit of our community. Beth will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, both within and outside the organization.

In honor of Beth’s memory, DC’s Different Drummers is embarking on a fundraising campaign to commission a piece by acclaimed American composer and LGBTQ+ community member, Julie Giroux. The composition will serve as a tribute to Beth’s enduring legacy within our organization, and we are humbled by the opportunity to celebrate her through a musical creation that reflects the impact she had on DCDD.

We invite you to join us in commemorating Beth’s contributions by contributing to our fundraising goal of $12,000. Your support will help make this meaningful project a reality. Thank you for visiting our campaign page and considering a donation. If you have any questions or wish to explore alternative ways of supporting this initiative, please feel free to reach out to us at development@dcdd.org.

About DC’s Different Drummers (DCDD):  D.C.’s Different Drummers is a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer music organization welcoming ALL musicians as it fosters pride, inclusivity, and engagement with the greater Washington, D.C. region through music.

D.C.’s Different Drummers started in 1980 with 7 musicians who got together in an apartment in Washington, DC, to play through some books of college fight songs. The first song played by the band was “On Wisconsin!”. Today our membership is well over 125 people with ensembles that cover classical, jazz, contemporary, marching music, and winter guard. We play all over the DC metro region, and we draw membership from the LGBT community and their supporters in the National Capital Region while striving to create music and fellowship.

D.C. Different Drummers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit music organization incorporated in the District of Columbia, and a participant in the Jon Sims Endowment Fund. We are founding members of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, proud members of TeamDC, and Pride Partners of the Capital Pride Alliance.
