Capital Pride Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is the D.C. Different Drummers’ largest ensemble, and features all instruments from the classic concert band. We pride ourselves in the variety of music we play, spanning the repertoire from standard concert band marches, to Broadway melodies, to all styles of classic and modern music, and new compositions. We welcome all musical skill-sets, and feature musicians from a number of backgrounds, from virtuosos to enthusiastic recreational players. With the span of musical selections we play, this is an excellent ensemble for members to develop their musical skills and exposure.

Marching Band

The Different Drummers’ Marching Band is our organization’s oldest and most visible ensemble. The group encompasses marching woodwinds, brass, percussion, along with a traditional color guard.  Our marching band performs annually in the Washington D.C.’s Capital Pride Parade and Pride Festival along with numerous other East Coast Pride engagements including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Hope, and many more. Different Drummers partners with TeamDC and performs annually through the summer “Night Out” series including performances at D.C. United soccer games and the National baseball games.  The Different Drummers also marched in the 2009 and 2013 Inaugural Parades with the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, the first LGBT contingents to participate in this seminal American parade. Our ensemble frequently performs informal on-the-spot concerts in Washington, D.C. as well, and periodically at private events.

Jazz Band

DC’s Different Drummers Jazz Band performs at numerous venues in the National Capital Region, including in recent years at the Capital Hill Arts Workshop, DC’s Capital Pride Festival,  Eastern Market’s Mr. Henry’s, The New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt MD, and Jammin’ Java in Vienna VA, along with other events, swing dances, and holiday concerts held in conjunction with the Symphonic Band. We play music in a variety of styles, from big band swing to latin to funk to blues and beyond. The Jazz Band is available for hire at private events.

2nd Independence

2nd Independence is a small-format jazz group that plays standards with a high emphasis on improvisation. They meet once a month to jam and perform in some of the more interesting venues around the DC area, including Strathmore and the Torpedo Factory. Everyone is invited to participate, though beginners may find it challenging.

Small Ensembles

Need a smaller group to perform? DC’s Different Drummers also host several small ensembles available for your private functions, holy unions, banquets or anytime you want to fabulize your event with live music. Our small ensembles include but are not limited to a brass quintet, saxophone quintet, clarinet quartet, woodwind quintet and more.
