Jazz Band

The Jazz Band performs at numerous venues in the National Capital Region, including in recent years at the Capital Hill Arts Workshop, DC’s Capital Pride Festival, U Street’s Twins Jazz, Eastern Market’s Mr. Henry’s, and Old Town Alexandria’s Torpedo Factory, along with other events, swing dances, and holiday concerts held in conjunction with the Symphonic Band. We have a particular love for the Big Band Era repertoire, and are available for hire at private events.

Rehearsals are held in fall, winter, and spring, at Capital Hill’s Lutheran Church of the Reformation every Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Please contact us for more information.

Cornelius Young, Director

A native of Mississippi, Cornelius Young has an extensive music background starting with a variety of ensembles in high school including jazz band where he was a jazz pianist and continued through college where he studied as a tuba major at the Univ. of Southern Mississippi.  During his time there, he continued his jazz studies and following graduate work at Eastern Michigan University, he moved to the DMV area to pursue a teaching career.  It is then that he joined DCDD’s Jazz Band for the first time as its jazz pianist and also had opportunities to participate in the Southern Maryland Jazz Orchestra, the Solid Brass Jazz Band, & the jazz trio, Shaken not Stirred.
